More and more, the roughest, most rowdy of the lesbians have staked off certain areas of The Strip for their own. Many of these girls are alumnae of reformatories and prisons. Many others are girls on the loose who gravitate toward the ceaseless motion, the bright lights and the frenetic noise of the district as an opiate for their boredom. These girls are fair game for the lesbian recruiters.

The dykes are in constant conflict not only with one another but with the pimps and the sadists who take special delight in beating up female transvestites. In consequence, many of the lesbians arm themselves with an assortment of weapons ranging from a cake of soap wrapped in a scarf to a .32 revolver, from a gravity knife to brass knuckles made from prying off the handle of a garbage pail with a can opener. This last weapon is one of the most fearsome. A single blow of the sharp metallic shards can maim the victim for life.

Brawls involving teenage lesbians occur almost nightly. Usually the fights are broken up before much damage is done. But, now and then, there is a fatality, as in a recent incident where a sixteen-year-old girl was hurled into a plate glass window and killed by a sliver of glass that penetrated her throat.

From time to time the police have tried to break up the congregation of youthful criminals in and around Times Square by “putting on heat.” This means staging a series of “flash raids” in which any suspicious-looking person may be arrested and charged with vagrancy. These indiscriminate round-ups have done far more harm than good. The true criminal elements are invariably forewarned of the raids and make themselves scarce. Those caught in the net are, for the most part, the small fry, the innocent or the near-innocent. Once having rounded up these youngsters, the police usually persuade them to plead guilty to a misdemeanor, for which they are fined a few dollars and then released. This guilty plea is essential to the police for, once the prisoner has thrown himself on the mercy of the court, he has no legal redress. A few hardy souls have been able to withstand police pressure and have dared the unpleasant publicity of a trial. If there is a failure to convict, the next step is a suit against the city for false arrest. Although the success of these damage suits is rarely publicized, for fear of bringing on a rash of similar suits, the flash raids have already cost New York City taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
